The Economic Impact of Mechanical Contractors in Canada
The mechanical contracting sector is a cornerstone of Canada’s construction and industrial economy, contributing over $33 billion to the national GDP—approximately 20% of construction GDP. This vital sector includes plumbing, HVAC, fire protection, and other mechanical systems essential to the safe and efficient operation of buildings and infrastructure across the country. With more than 205,000 Canadians employed, mechanical contracting represents 26% of all specialty trades, making it one of the largest and most dynamic segments of the skilled trades workforce
The Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada (MCAC) commissioned this study to provide policymakers, industry leaders, and the public with a clearer understanding of the sector’s value. Developed in partnership with BuildForce Canada and Prism Economics, the report offers both national and provincial breakdowns, highlighting regional strengths and workforce trends.
Industry Practices Bulletin
Industry Practice Bulletins provide members with clear, practical guidance on key topics affecting mechanical contracting. Developed to promote consistency and professionalism across the industry, these bulletins help contractors stay informed, aligned, and equipped to meet evolving standards.
In 2025, MCAC launched the following bulletins:
- April 2025: Price Escalation and Supply Chain Challenges
- February 2025: Progress Payments for Material Deposits
National Trade Contractors Council of Canada Best Practices Guide
This guide outlines key considerations for trade contractors when reviewing and submitting tenders, with the goal of promoting fair, transparent, and efficient project execution. It emphasizes the importance of understanding contract terms, managing risk, and ensuring clarity in responsibilities and pricing.
Topics include scope assumptions, material standards, site logistics, scheduling, insurance, payment terms, and change order protocols. By following these best practices, trade contractors can protect their interests, reduce disputes, and contribute to a more professional and collaborative construction environment.
Change Order Protocol
The 2022 MCAC Change Order Protocol provides guidance for managing changes in project scope—such as additions, deletions, or revisions—that can significantly impact project costs. Recognizing that such changes are common and potentially contentious, the protocol outlines a fair and reasonable approach to pricing and costing change orders. It serves as a reference tool to help avoid disputes and litigation, while emphasizing that contract terms take precedence.
The document includes helpful considerations for pricing changes, though these are not exhaustive and should be used as a guide rather than a strict rulebook.
