Student Chapter Summit

Student Photo from SummitEach year members of Student Chapters come together to for two days of seminars on HR skills, career opportunities, innovations in mechanical contracting, site visits, and social activities to name a few.

This year students from the University of Waterloo and McMaster University—together with contractors, faculty and MCA staff members—converged in Waterloo for an opportunity to learn a little more about the mechanical contracting industry. Students participated in such sessions as “A Day in the Life of a Mechanical Contractor”, “Interview Skills and Tips”, “Innovations in Modular Construction”, “Interface Management, an Emerging PM Discipline”, “3D Laser Scanning” and “Location Sensing in Construction.” They attended a technology symposium where university graduates talked about technological tools they have developed for the construction industry, and Trimble paid a visit to demonstrate the tools they are using for 3D imaging. Finally, in what was the highlight of the weekend, students visited the UA 527 training centre. There, they had a great time working hands on with the materials of the trade.

The weekend wasn’t all hard work. Everyone had the opportunity to mix and mingle at several social functions and the McMaster University Student Chapter Competition Team shared their experiences of participating in MCA America’s annual competition. Experiences such as these cannot take place without the support from industry. The conference was offered at no cost to the students. We would like to sincerely thank MCA Ontario, MCA Kitchener – Waterloo, MCA Canada, MCA Hamilton, Shell, Aecon, UA 527 and Trimble for their generous contributions.  To sample what was offered in 2015 click here.
